Service Learning is a multi-faceted instructional method use to engage students integrating youth driven meaningful service with civic responsibility and academic success. Structured reflection time is provided for students to reinforce the experience through a variety of activities about the service experience. Service Learning provides an opportunity for students to acquire skills and knowledge in real-life situations, extend learning beyond the classroom while fostering a connection to individuals and the community.
Service-Learning is often linked to school and college courses, inspiring these educational organizations to build strong partnerships with community-based organizations. Service-Learning is also an integral part of community organizations by providing service with learning objectives and structured reflection activities for participants.
Whatever the setting, the core element of service-learning is always the intent that both providers and recipients find the experience meaningful, beneficial and profoundly transforming.
